Botox™ Treatments with Dr. Spiegl

Botulinum Toxin Treatments in Salzburg and the Tullnerfeld

Botulinum toxin does not act on the skin but on the muscle beneath it: it relaxes overactive muscles in a targeted way by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that reach them. This is why it is suited to expression lines and not to loss of volume, which is treated with fillers – the two methods are not in competition, they solve different problems. The aim is a fresh, natural appearance and not a mask-like face, which is why dosage remains restrained and follows the individual anatomy. Beyond the treatment of wrinkles, the same principle can be applied very precisely: to raise descended brows, to accentuate the upper lip, to stabilise a nasal tip that drops when smiling, or to correct a gummy smile. A second, purely medical application is the treatment of excessive sweating. Following a detailed consultation in which Dr. Spiegl analyses facial anatomy and expression, the outpatient treatment usually takes ten to twenty minutes and is barely painful; patients are generally presentable again immediately, or at the latest the following day. The overview below introduces the available treatments briefly – each detail page covers the procedure, duration of effect and costs.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Botox smooths existing expression lines and prevents new ones from forming. Typical treatment areas are the frown line between the brows, forehead lines, crow’s feet and fine lines in the lower face. By relaxing the muscles concerned, the skin above them smooths out while natural facial expression is preserved. The effect begins after a few days, reaches its maximum after approximately two weeks and usually lasts three to six months. Treatment is charged per zone; during the first 24 hours, intensive exercise, strong sunlight, alcohol and massaging of the treated area should be avoided.

Botox™ for Excessive Sweating

In cases of excessive sweating, botulinum toxin blocks the signal transmission to the sweat glands: perspiration in the treated area decreases considerably, although it is not stopped completely. The areas treated are primarily the underarms, as well as the hands and feet. Depending on the number of areas, the session takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis; a numbing cream can be applied beforehand on request, and no particular preparation is required. The effect sets in within a few days to about a week and lasts for several months. The treatment is not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, nor in cases of neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis; where there is a medical indication, reimbursement by the health insurer is possible in some cases.

Browtox – Non-Surgical Eyebrow Lift

With Browtox the eyebrows are raised slightly and the eyes appear more open and fresher. What is treated are not the muscles that lift the brow, but those that pull it down: when these depressors are selectively relaxed, the forehead muscle works unopposed and the brow rises by a few millimetres. The treatment is suited to a tired or descended appearance of the eyes, to a slight tendency towards hooded lids and to asymmetrical eyebrows; where there is pronounced excess skin, the surgical eyebrow lift remains the method of choice. The effect begins after approximately three to seven days and lasts around three to six months.

Lip Flip

In the lip flip, the ring muscle around the mouth is relaxed with a very small quantity of botulinum toxin. The upper lip rolls slightly outwards and appears fuller – entirely without fillers. Therein lies the difference from lip augmentation: the lip flip changes the position of the lip, the filler changes its volume. The treatment is suited to a subtle accentuation of the upper lip and to a lip that rolls inwards when smiling. The effect lasts approximately three to four months, and therefore less long than in other areas, because the muscle is constantly in motion.

Nasal Tip Botox™

A nasal tip that drops when smiling is gently raised by targeted injections: what is relaxed is the small muscle between the nasal tip and the upper lip, which pulls the tip downwards during movement. The result appears calmer and more harmonious, without surgery. This is a minimal correction on the scale of millimetres, which does not change the shape of the nose but its behaviour in motion – it is therefore not an alternative to surgical rhinoplasty. The effect lasts approximately three to six months.

Gummy-Smile Botox™

A gummy smile arises from overactive upper lip musculature: when smiling, the upper lip is raised so far that a broad band of gum becomes visible. Botox reduces this activity, so that the upper lip rises less far and less gum shows when smiling – the smile itself remains unchanged. The method is an alternative to surgical correction, as long as the cause is muscular rather than skeletal or dental. The effect begins after approximately three to five days and lasts around three to six months.
